The obsession people have with beauty, hair and makeup is very common in today’s time. One name that is making waves in the beauty industry is Katrina Scott for her extraordinary skills. She is the founder of Shades of Melanin Hair, an online-based business based in Houston, Texas. The company is completely owned and operated by black women who supply unprocessed 100% virgin hair extensions, wigs, lashes and much more. Founded on September 30, 2019, the main purpose of this brand is to make all shades of women with melanin feel beautiful while putting the hair extensions.
The company recently completed one year and in a year, it has expanded its base by serving clients locally and across the globe. The inspiration behind the creation of Shades of Melanin is Katrina’s mother and grandmother whom she considers the most influential people in her life. Adding to it, she said, “My daughters always inspire me to work because I want to be the best in their eyes. With their endless support, I can build an empire which is running successfully now.” Offering a variety of hair extensions and lashes, the company has built a loyal customer base because of its excellent services to the clients. Praising her daughters Sasha, Alicia and Dawona, the proud mother said that she feels happy to have her three children as the face of the brand.
“My daughters are in college and I am really moved by their inputs in the business. Why have ambassadors for your brand when your daughters can do it better? All my 3 children with their best knowledge are taking the business to a new level. We work together as a team and make sure to give the clients the best experience with the products”, added Katrina. Coming from a medical background, Katrina has got a full-time job in healthcare besides running her own business. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the founder has been working double as her business came to a standstill for 2 months. She says that God has been kind and all her prayers are being fulfilled one at a time.
The entrepreneur further gave brilliant advice to brand owners who own small scale companies. In such times of pandemic, Katrina stated that one must stay strong, have faith in God and upgrade skills by learning some new activity. “Don’t get discouraged by looking at the success of contemporaries. Make sure you are in a race with your own self and company. My business picked up when I focused on delivering quality products and not comparing my company’s products to other brands”, quoted Scott. Bringing novelty in her products, Katrina Scott revealed that they are planning to do hair pop-ups in each city. Their future plan is to get a big warehouse to store their products and hire more people to take the business forward.
