Keeping Eyes Healthy with Daily Hygiene at North Shore Eye

Just as regular flossing is crucial for tooth health, a simple daily eyelid treatment can prevent the build-up of bacteria and mites that cause common eye conditions, such as dry eye

CEDARBURG, WI / ACCESSWIRE / August 19, 2015 / North Shore Eye Health and Wellness, a top provider of optometry services in Southeastern Wisconsin, announced today that it is recommending a new strategy for keeping eyes healthy - daily wiping of the eyelids and eyelashes with an effective new lid and lash hygiene product.

As North Shore's Chief Optometrist, Dr. Kyle Ross, OD/FAAO, writes in a recent article, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Dr. Ross explains that chronic dry eye syndrome is becoming an epidemic in America, affecting tens of millions of Americans. The condition comes in a number of different forms, with names like blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), meibomitis, and ocular rosacea.

Typically, the underlying causes are similar - overpopulations of bacteria and infestations of tiny mites that live on the eyelids, eyelashes and skin around the eye. These overpopulations and infestations lead to inflammation. This inflammation manifests itself as redness, swelling, crusty buildups on the eyelids, itchiness, burning, pain. It also contributes to the loss of the natural oils that normally keep the tear film on the eye from evaporating. Without a healthy tear film, the eye becomes dry.

Dr. Ross writes that in the past "management of these patients has been a difficult task for optometrists and ophthalmologists." His patients report that over-the-counter products fail to provide lasting relief and sometimes are irritating to eyelids. Stronger measures, such as prescription antibiotics or steroid eye drops, provide relief, but can only be used acutely and have significant side effects if used chronically.

Now, however, there is a new product, called Avenova, that does work - and that provides safe, lasting relief. "The primary ingredient in this revolutionary product is Neutrox, a pure, stable form of hypochlorous acid, the same chemical produced by the body's white blood cells to combat against infections without developing resistance," writes Dr. Ross. Avenova and Neutrox are made by NovaBay(R) Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NYSE MKT: NBY), an Emeryville, CA-based biopharmaceutical company developing and commercializing topical non-antibiotic antimicrobial products.

Lab tests show that Neutrox not only kills bacteria in solution, it also neutralizes toxins that can cause inflammation and breaks up bacterial biofilms. As a result, "Avenova, in my clinical observations, offers our suffering patients relief from their red, sore, achy eyes," explains Dr. Ross.

In fact, Avenova- makes possible a whole new strategy for managing eye hygiene. Just as regular tooth brushing and flossing prevents tooth and gum problems, a simple twice-daily wiping of the eyelids with Avenova offers daily lid hygiene that may minimize the conditions that lead to serious eye problems. "It is a strong preventative measure that may ultimately help keep the ocular surface healthy and comfortable throughout life," Dr. Ross concludes.
