Starting Today, KFC Will Be Serving Chicken And Waffles Nationwide·Delish

UPDATE, November 18, 2019, 12:43 p.m.:

The highly anticipated KFC chicken and waffles are officially available nationwide. Starting today, fried chicken and waffles will be available at KFC restaurants...but only for a limited time.

During this limited release, Nashville Hot Chicken & Waffles will be an option, too. This is a spicy, smoky, saucy version of your choice of KFC tenders or bone-in chicken, so it adds another layer of flavor alongside the sweet Belgian waffles and syrup.

You can get one breast, two-piece thigh, and drumstick, or three-piece tenders with a waffle and a side of Mrs. Butterworth’s syrup for $6.49 or you can get a Crispy Colonel Waffle Sandwich for $5.99. Prices may vary by location, but this menu item will only be around for a limited time, so hit up KFC before December 31!

The southern breakfast gods have spoken. After tests in North and South Carolina, two styles are being added to the menu through December 31. Get your stretchy pants ready.

You can order a plate, which comes with thick, Belgian Liege-style waffles and either extra crispy fried chicken or extra crispy tenders, plus a side of Mrs. Butterworth's syrup. Or, you can get a sandwich, with KFC's new sweet-heat Hot Honey fried chicken served between two waffles.

The waffles are made with yeast-raised dough instead of a batter, and a Belgian pearl sugar that creates a sweet and crunchy outer texture, per a KFC press release. Head Chef Bob Das calls them "sweeter and doughier than American-style waffles," which sounds promising, if you ask me.

The two dishes will be on menus Monday for $5.49 for a plate or $5.99 for a sandwich.

For a brand that's built around fried chicken, it's pretty shocking KFC hasn't experimented with chicken and waffles yet. Thankfully, the chain is finally testing the waters — restaurants in three cities are slinging the dish this summer, and they're in the best place to make a judgment call on how it goes.

Two cities in North Carolina (Asheville and Charlotte) and one in South Carolina (Greenville) were picked to test KFC's new dish, and if it can stand up to southerners who get to eat Dame's Chicken and Waffles whenever they want, it'll be more than good enough for the rest of us.

Per The Charlotte Observer, the meal comes with two pieces of chicken — either bone-in dark meat or boneless chicken tenders — and a thick Belgian waffle about the size of your hand. It's served with a side of Mrs. Butterworth's syrup, but the Observer recommends asking for hot sauce too.

"We know that chicken and waffles have a cult following across the country, especially in the south, but not everyone has it available close by," KFC's senior marketing director Mike Wesley said in a statement. "We’re excited to hear what North Carolinian taste buds have to say."

KFC's chicken and waffles are in select stores now through July 29 for between $5 and $5.49 an order. If all goes well, we may see them in more cities later on.
