Need To Know: Flotek Industries, Inc. (NYSE:FTK) Insiders Have Been Buying Shares

Neil Montgomery

We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. On the other hand, we’d be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So we’ll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Flotek Industries, Inc. (NYSE:FTK).

Do Insider Transactions Matter?

It’s quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.

We would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. As Peter Lynch said, ‘insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise.’

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Flotek Industries

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Chairman John Chisholm bought US$115k worth of shares at a price of US$3.41 per share. That means that even when the share price was higher, an insider wanted to purchase shares. While their view may have changed since the purchase was made, this does at least suggest they have had confidence in the company’s future. It’s not at all bad to see insiders buy shares at or above current prices.

Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 70.67k shares worth US$240k. In the last twelve months there was more buying than selling by Flotek Industries insiders. Their average price was about US$3.40. I’d consider this a positive as it suggests insiders see value at around the current price, which is US$1.16. Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it’s a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. Flotek Industries insiders own 8.9% of the company, currently worth about US$5.9m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Flotek Industries Tell Us?

There haven’t been any insider transactions in the last three months — that doesn’t mean much. But insiders have shown more of an appetite for the stock, over the last year. The transactions are fine but it’d be more encouraging if Flotek Industries insiders bought more shares in the company.
