CHICAGO, IL--(Marketwired - Aug 20, 2014) - According to US Magazine and TMZ, Kourtney Kardashian, Scott Disick and their two young children have left their recently purchased Calabasas mansion due to a mold infestation. Kourtney is claiming that the house was sold to the family in this condition by former NFL star Keyshawn Johnson.
Here at MI&T, the largest "test only" mold inspection company, we have already been asked our professional opinion on the situation. Without seeing the problem first hand, it is impossible to determine the extent of a problem or say who is right and who is wrong. We deal with these types of disputes on a daily basis. Sometimes the accuser is right on the money and other times they are completely blowing it out of proportion.
With the above being true and no documentation about what was happening at the home, we cannot side with the Kardashians or Mr. Johnson at this time. However, we do feel that it is necessary that we take the opportunity to educate people on the subject of indoor mold growth and offer some tips so others can avoid these types of conflicts. Here is what we feel most people should know about the topic.
Mold is Everywhere
Tiny mold spores are present at levels both outside and inside every home or business. It is typically not problematic until a moisture/humidity problem is present in a living environment. If left untreated it can colonize and cause unsafe living conditions.
Problems Can be Temporarily Covered Up
Just as Kourtney Kardashian is claiming, problems can often be wiped away or painted over to hide the appearance of a problem. That is why we always recommend air sampling be done before purchasing a house or signing a long lease. Air samples will pick up whether or not elevated conditions exist or not regardless of whether or not there is visible mold. It will be very difficult for The Kardashians to prove this mold problem was present prior to them living there.
Avoiding a Conflict of Interest
If you do feel that a problem is present, it is wise to hire an independent third party for the assessment that does not offer mold removal services. Unfortunately restoration companies have an incentive to say a problem exists when it really does not.
High Risk Properties
Other than water intrusion, properties being left vacant for an extended period of time are most likely to develop mold problems. Foreclosures are not the only risk either, many apartment units are left unfilled for months at a time. Some people turn off the air conditioning to save on costs and cause some serious problems.
Most Problems Can be Fixed
Since these types of issues need to be handled with such caution, these types of problems can be costly to remediate. Avoiding doing so can cause an environment to be deemed uninhabitable, it is very rare that a property is condemned. For real estate transactions, we can determine the extent of the problem. This prevents a sale from falling apart by simply adjusting the price.
Inspectors Help Solve Disputes
Having a mold inspection performed by someone outside of the mold removal process can save a lot of headaches. Without the suggestion of work or any referrals, both sides of the argument can usually trust the professional experts opinion. Hopefully The Kardashians and Mr. Johnson can sort this out without getting lawyers involved but only time will tell.
