The head of Spain's La Liga has emerged as a potential contender in the Premier League's long-running saga to find a new chief executive.

Javier Tebas, who has run La Liga since 2013, is the second name to be linked with the job in recent weeks after the league failed to in bids to recruit two television executives - Discovery's Susanna Dinnage and the BBC's Tim Davie.

Sir Gary Verity, 54, the chief executive of tourism agency Welcome to Yorkshire, is understood to have been in talks with recruiters after they were forced to scrap an initial shortlist and start again.

Last year Tebas secured a deal with promoters in the US to play La Liga matches there. The first match was due to be Barcelona v Girona in Miami next month but the plan has been blocked by the Spanish FA. A nominations committee headed by the Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck has reportedly invited all 20 Premier League clubs to submit the names of anyone they believe is a good candidate for the position.

La Liga said in a statement last night: “Javier has a contract with La Liga and not only is he happy at La Liga, he also has lot of responsibilities and many challenges to work on with changing the broadcast landscape, the threat of new competitions and format changes that put domestic competition at risk.”
