Labour split: 'Between this and Brexit we're f*****' picked up on microphone during live BBC broadcast

The words “between this and Brexit we’re f*****” were picked up on a microphone during a live BBC broadcast of the press conference announcing the resignations of seven Labour MPs.

A male voice could be heard muttering the words as Luciana Berger paid tribute to the late Labour stalwart Paul Flynn then introduced a question and answer session.

The voice said: “Not gonna lie, between this and Brexit, we’re actually f*****.

“It’s going to be so divided.”

The rest of what was said was less clear but included the line “the Conservatives are gonna win but…”

Commenting on the incident, a spokeswoman for the BBC said: "Due to an error, we inadvertently broadcast some background comments from another microphone during our coverage of the press conference this morning. We apologised on air once we realised our mistake.”

After the words were aired, many took to social media in amusement.

One wrote: “Watching via BBC and just wanted to give a shout out the people who are unaware they’re being picked up on a mic, giving us their thoughts during the press conference.”

The blunder came as Labour was rocked by a historic split with seven MPs walking out amid savage criticisms of Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership.

The seven included Chuka Umunna, Luciana Berger and Chris Leslie will sit as The Independent Group and are all fierce anti-Brexit camapigners.

Mr Umunna gave a strong signal that they aim to form a new centre party in future, and said: “The established parties are not up to this challenge... they have failed to fulfil their duties with the competence the public deserves.”

Additionally, he urged MPs from other parties to come on board and said: “It’s time we dumped this country’s old-fashioned politics... So we’ve have taken the first step in leaving the old, tribal politics behind and we invite others who share our political values to do so to.”
