At last, Kansas State says QB Jesse Ertz is out for the season
Kansas State’s shroud of secrecy surrounding quarterback Jesse Ertz has been lifted with one game to go in the regular season.
KSU coach Bill Snyder said Tuesday that Ertz will miss the Wildcats’ game against Iowa State and the team’s bowl game because of a knee injury. The senior QB will still go through senior day festivities on Saturday.
Alex Delton started in Ertz’s place against then-No. 6 TCU as Ertz was reportedly dealing with a knee injury. Snyder confirmed that knee injury Tuesday and said Ertz would need surgery.
The program had been playing coy with Ertz’s status since he was sidelined. He warmed up before the TCU game, but hadn’t been in uniform since with no official declaration by the Wildcats of his status.
Delton is injured too. Per KStateOnline.com, Delton is not expected to play against Iowa State. That means redshirt freshman Skylar Thompson will likely start. Thompson briefly had to leave Kansas State’s win over Oklahoma State last week because of a leg injury he suffered while committing a fourth-quarter fumble.
The injury sidelined him for Kansas State’s next offensive position and meant the Wildcats had to put in fourth-string QB Hunter Hall. He served as a decoy, as the team went wildcat for three plays with running back Alex Barnes before punting. Thankfully for KSU, Oklahoma State didn’t get a first down after Kansas State had to punt and the Wildcats held on 45-40.
Ertz officially finishes the season 55-100 for 930 yards passing, seven touchdowns and three interceptions. He’s still the team’s third-leading rusher with 336 rushing yards and three touchdowns.
