LATAM Airlines' Traffic and Load Factor Increase in August

LATAM Airlines Group LTM reported impressive traffic figures for August, wherein load factor (% of seats filled by passengers) improved as traffic increased while capacity contracted.

Backed by strong demand for air travel, consolidated traffic (measured in revenue passenger kilometers or RPKs) came in at 10.5 billion, up 2.5% from the year-ago figure. On a year-over-year basis, consolidated capacity (measured in available seat miles/ASMs) declined 0.2% to 12.53 billion, reflecting capacity discipline. Meanwhile, consolidated load factor improved to 83.9% from 81.6% a year ago. Passenger count climbed 6.6% to 6.37 million.

In the first eight months of 2019, LATAM Airlines, which competes with the likes of GOL Linhas GOL, Azul AZUL and Copa Holdings CPA in the Latin American aviation space, generated RPKs of 82.64 billion (up 5.4% year over year) and ASMs of 98.5 billion (up 4.6% year over year). Load factor registered an increase of 0.6 percentage points year over year to 83.9%. Passenger count at LATAM Airlines increased 7.1% in the January- August period.
