Leading US Indexes Close Higher Friday and for the Week of Dec. 13

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 28,135.38 on Friday with a gain of 3.33 points or 0.01%. The S&P 500 closed at 3,168.80 for a gain of 0.23 points or 0.01%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 8,734.88 for a gain of 17.56 points or 0.20%. The VIX Volatility Index was lower at 12.63 for a loss of 1.31 points or -9.40%.

For the week, the Nasdaq gained 0.9%, the S&P 500 gained 0.7% and the Dow Jones gained 0.4%. For the year, the Nasdaq has gained 31.04%, the S&P 500 is up 26.25% and the Dow Jones is up 20.51%.

Friday's market movers

Conservative majority in the U.K. Parliament and a U.S trade agreement announcement with China led headlines Friday, helping stocks to close out the week with gains. Boris Johnson was re-elected in his district and Conservatives took the majority of Parliament. The results are expected to lead to a continuation of Johnson's plan to complete Brexit by the end of January 2020.

In the U.S., the Trump administration announced an agreement with China on trade. Key provisions include the decrease of some tariffs in place, the cancelation of tariffs scheduled for Dec. 15 and China's commitment to U.S. agricultural purchases.

Economic reports affecting market trading included the following:

  • Retail sales increased 0.2% in November following an increase of 0.4%. Year over year, retail sales increased 3.3%. Retail sales excluding autos increased 0.1% following an increase of 0.3%.
  • Export and import prices were released. Export prices increased 0.2% in November following a 0.1% decrease. Year over year, export prices decreased 1.3%. Import prices increased 0.2% in November following a decrease of 0.5%. Year over year, import prices decreased 1.3%.
  • Business inventories increased 0.2% in October following a decrease of 0.1%.
  • The Baker Hughes North American oil rig count increased to 952 from 937.

In the S&P 500, utilities, technology and consumer staples led gains. In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

  • Visa (NYSE:V) 1.37%
  • Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) 1.36%
  • Home Depot (NYSE:HD) 0.96%

In small caps, the Russell 2000 closed at 1,637.98 for a loss of 6.84 points or -0.42%. The S&P 600 closed at 1,002.79 for a loss of 6.80 points or -0.67%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Growth Index closed at 10,461.63 for a loss of 33.69 points or -0.32%. The Dow Jones U.S. Small-Cap Value Index closed at 9,795.51 for a loss of 79.29 points or -0.80%.
