LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Director Lee Daniels' biopic of a White House butler who served eight presidents topped the weekend box office while three other new releases failed to connect with fans.

"Lee Daniels' The Butler" features an ensemble cast led by Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey in her first big-screen appearance since 1998's "Beloved."

The superhero caper "Kick-Ass 2," dramatic thriller "Paranoia" and Steve Jobs biopic "Jobs" also opened Friday but were outpaced by holdovers from the previous week.

The Jennifer Aniston-Jason Sudeikis comedy, "We're the Millers," was the runner-up for the second week in a row, while last week's top movie, "Elysium," came in third.
