In the last trading session, U.S. stocks were in the red as Fed rate hike worries, dollar strength and crashes in oil prices weighed on the market. Among the top ETFs, investors saw SPY shed about 0.7%, DIA lose about 0.5% and QQQ move lower by more than 0.8% on the day.
Two more specialized ETFs are worth noting in particular though as both saw trading volume that was far outside of normal. In fact, both these funds experienced volume levels that were more than double their average for the most recent trading session. This could make these ETFs ones to watch out for in the days ahead to see if this trend of extra interest continues:
JDST: Volume 3.94 times average
This triple-leveraged inverse gold-miners ETF was under the microscope yesterday as nearly 6.97 million shares moved hands. This compares to an average trading day of 1.77 million shares and came as JDST added about 19.8% in the session.
The movement was due to the greenback strength which caused a sell-off in the gold bullion market. Taking cues from this negative trend, this inverse leveraged junior gold miners ETF saw above-average volume levels. JDST was down about 38.2% in the past one-month period.
DBA: Volume 3.81 times average
This agricultural ETF was in focus yesterday as roughly 1.1 million shares moved hands compared with an average of roughly 284,800 shares. We also saw some stock price movement as shares of DBA lost about 0.9% yesterday.
Renewed strength in the greenback in the wake of sooner-than-expected Fed hike talks was detrimental to broader commodities like what we find in this ETF portfolio. The fund has a Zacks ETF Rank #5 (Strong Sell). However, in the last one month, DBA was up about 5.2%.
