License to meme: Social media mocks racist reactions to latest Idris Elba-as-Bond rumors

After much speculation, Daniel Craig signed up for his fifth go-round as James Bond earlier this year, announcing that he’d be teaming with Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Trainspotting) on a sequel set to debut in theaters in November 2019. Despite Craig’s return, however, speculation has been rampant about who will subsequently assume the 007 mantle, with fans diligently petitioning series producers to make a bold choice by selecting Idris Elba as the next incarnation of the iconic British spy. This week a new report indicated that such casting may actually take place — and the response on Twitter has been especially pointed.

As one might expect, many have reacted to this news with less-than-tolerant online comments, given that Elba is black and Bond has historically been white. Rather than simply engaging with those trolls, though, more than a few fans have used this potential casting news to joke about the racist treatment an Elba Bond might actually face — all as a way to both turn the tables on those who might object to his participation because of his skin color and to simultaneously address heated issues that remain front and center in contemporary society.

Others, meanwhile, have simply anticipated — and decried — the racist backlash that would likely follow any such announcement.

No matter the outcry, moviegoers seem largely convinced that Elba could handle the martini-loving role — and perhaps a few others while he’s at it.

Interserve shares sink as it battles to avoid Carillion's fate

The Reading-based outsourcer, which employs 75,000 worldwide and has thousands of UK government contracts to clean hospitals and serve school meals, said on Sunday it would seek to cut its debt to 1.5 times core earnings in talks with lenders it hopes to complete early next year. Chief Executive Debbie White said that the company was trading well and in line with expectations for 2018, and that the debt reduction plan, first floated in a refinancing in April, had government support. Carillion's (CLLN.L) collapse in a mass of debt and pensions dues in January forced the government to step in to guarantee services ranging from roadworks to school meals and led to a parliamentary inquiry into the extent to which private companies should be running essential services.

Here's Why Renewable Energy Group Fell 13.3% in November

North America's largest producer of biomass-based diesel fuels reported third-quarter 2018 earnings. The year-over-year decline in revenue was driven by a nearly 6% decrease in average selling prices, but more so from selling fewer renewable fuel credits (called renewable identification numbers, or RINs) in the marketplace. Sales of the credits can fluctuate from year to year based on the value of the credits, the timing of purchases from petroleum refiners, and policy decisions or the anticipation thereof.

After slashing his (MU) stock-price target by 40% in October, Susquehanna analyst Mehdi Hosseini has cut his forecast for the chip shares again. In similar fashion, KeyBanc Capital Markets lowered its sales estimates for several chip stocks on Sunday, saying the semiconductor sector is struggling with inventory problems and weaker-than-expected orders. “We are lowering DRAM and NAND bit shipment estimates for 2019 and 2020...we expect lower bit shipments in the February and May quarters due to weaker server and mobile demand,” Hosseini wrote on Monday.
