In the western U.S., the highest average lightning frequency is in New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. Storms occur on the southeast Plains in May and June, but in other regions mostly during July and August. Most of the lightning starts around mid-day over the higher terrain moving outward to lower regions in the afternoon and early evening.
