Game recap: Jacksonville Jaguars stomp L.A. Chargers, heaviest road win since 2001

Is it time for California dreaming or more West Coast woes for the Jacksonville Jaguars? The Jaguars traveled Sunday to meet the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3 of the 2022 NFL season, one week after the Jags beat the Indianapolis Colts to vault into first place in the AFC South at 1-1.

Last week's victory was the first for head coach Doug Pederson while in charge of the Jaguars. The team won on the road on the Pacific coast for the first time since the 2019 season at the Oakland Raiders.

In the spotlight this week has been the quarterback matchup. The Jaguars' Trevor Lawrence was coming off one of the strongest games of his career against Indianapolis. For the Chargers, the key question was simple: Is third-year quarterback Justin Herbert, hampered by a rib injury, anywhere close to 100 percent? Veteran backup Chase Daniel is in his 13th NFL season but has only five career starts, none since 2019.

7:03 p.m. | FINAL: Jaguars 38, Chargers 10

It's a final. That's the heaviest Jaguars win on the road since 2001. The 18-game losing skid is history. This team is 2-1 and on top of the AFC South.

6:45 p.m. | Touchdown, again: Trevor Lawrence makes it 38 with TD to Marvin Jones

An excellent, methodical Jacksonville Jaguars drive. And it ends in the end zone.

Yes, there were passes, including a Trevor Lawrence strike to Marvin Jones to convert a tricky third down. But most of the way, it was James Robinson and Travis Etienne running the show, chewing up more than eight minutes and totally quashing the Chargers' comeback bid. A screen to Etienne caught Los Angeles defenders totally off guard.

The final blow: Lawrence to Marvin Jones in the back of the end zone, an acrobatic effort to get the feet down in bounds. This would be the third-heaviest win on the road in Jaguars history.

Jaguars 38, Chargers 10, 4:54 4th.

6:33 p.m. | Jaguars slam door on Charger drive

Justin Herbert launched another long ball across midfield. The Jaguars made sure it didn't matter.

Devin Lloyd deflected a second-down pass and Tyson Campbell broke up a fourth-down attempt. That means a turnover on downs.

6:28 p.m. | END OF THIRD QUARTER: Jaguars 31, Chargers 10

One quarter left to go.

6:23 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence finds Christian Kirk for TD

It's another scoring Jacksonville drive, and another one with a fourth-down gamble that paid off. To begin, James Robinson and Travis Etienne repeatedly hit the weakened Los Angeles defense for steady gains across midfield.

Then, Trevor Lawrence went to work with passes to Christian Kirk and Zay Jones. A direct snap to Etienne moved inside the L.A. 10. After the Chargers stopped a third-and-short dive, Lawrence plunged over the line on a fourth-down sneak. That set up a TD pass from 4 yards, with Lawrence throwing to Kirk on the sideline.

Doug Pederson kept up the gambling pattern, going for two, and Lawrence flipped a pass to a wide-open Evan Engram. The Jaguars are leading by three touchdowns in California.

Jaguars 31, Chargers 10, 1:15 3rd.

6:15 p.m. | Injuries, injuries, injuries: Joey Bosa, Rashawn Slater, now Kenneth Murray off field for Chargers.

Add linebacker Kenneth Murray to the ever-lengthening list of injured Chargers. Los Angeles — already without Joey Bosa and Rashawn Slater after injuries earlier in this game — is becoming severely depleted.

The Jaguars are on the march again.

6:08 p.m. | Devin Lloyd helps force three-and-out

The Chargers went nowhere on yet another drive. Credit Devin Lloyd with a couple of fine plays, with excellent deep pass coverage on first down and an open-field tackle on third down to deny Los Angeles.

The rookie is looking good for the Jaguars.

6:02 p.m. | Touchdown! James Robinson to the house on fourth down

Activating the Big Play Alert for James Robinson.

Doug Pederson elected to go for fourth-and-1 at midfield. Risky, right? Not with James Robinson. The running back took off behind left tackle Cam Robinson and he was gone, 50 yards to the end zone for the longest touchdown of the third-year rusher's career.

Trevor Lawrence had ignited that drive with passes to Zay Jones and Christian Kirk.

Jaguars 23, Chargers 10, 10:38 3rd.

5:56 p.m. | Field goal Los Angeles: Chargers cut Jaguars' lead to one score

Boom. That's what makes Justin Herbert so dangerous: Facing third and a mile, he rolls right, launches a cannon pass across his body and completes a 54-yard bomb to Jalen Guyton. It's the first time the Jaguars have been beaten deep today.

From there, another pass from Herbert to Josh Palmer advanced inside the 10, but the Jaguars' defense forced three consecutive incompletions. That led to a Dustin Hopkins field goal from 25 yards.

The Chargers also lost key offensive tackle Rashawn Slater, the latest of a flood of injuries to strike the Chargers of late.

Jaguars 16, Chargers 10, 11:51 3rd.

5:48 p.m. | Start of third quarter: Jaguars kick off to open second half

Back to the action in California. Can the Jaguars keep their lead?

5:35 p.m. | HALFTIME: Jaguars 16, Chargers 7

The Jaguars are two quarters away from ending their run of West Coast woes.

5:33 p.m. | Chargers drive ends in incompletions

Justin Herbert misfires on second and third down. The Los Angeles drive goes nowhere and this game is almost ready for halftime.

5:30 p.m. | Big first half for Jaguars WR Zay Jones

The numbers so far for Zay Jones: Five catches, 41 yards and a TD. A solid first two quarters for the free-agent pickup.

5:28 p.m. | After overturned TD, Jaguars settle for third field goal

Touchdown or no touchdown? Officials initially called Evan Engram's catch in the end zone a touchdown off Trevor Lawrence's pass, but after a replay review, the call changed to incomplete. Referee Craig Wrolstad announced that Engram's feet had left the ground before he secured possession.

That was the main highlight of a long march, which began with the Trevor Lawrence-Zay Jones combination again to convert third-and-5. Then, Lawrence found Christian Kirk downfield for a gain of 35, the latest incursion against the Chargers' red zone. Lawrence passed to Jones again for another third-down conversion, advancing the football inside the 10.

After the overturned TD, Derwin James downed a scrambling Lawrence at the 5. Doug Pederson summoned Riley Patterson for his third 23-yard field goal of the day.

Jaguars 16, Chargers 7, 1:02 2nd.

5:10 p.m. | Touchdown Chargers: Justin Herbert solid on scoring drive

Whether he's 100 percent or not, you can't count out Justin Herbert. For the first time today, the third-year QB found a bit of a rhythm with the Chargers' offense. Two passes picked up yardage across the midfield stripe. Another pass to DeAndre Carter moved it inside the 35, then another to Gerald Everett picked up one more first down inside the red zone.

From there, a 15-yard pass to Mike Williams led to the touchdown, with the former Clemson wideout outjumping Tyson Campbell and getting his feet down in bounds.

Jaguars 13, Chargers 7, 6:10 2nd.

5:00 p.m. | Touchdown Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence finds Zay Jones after recovery

Are the Jaguars ready for a win in L.A.?

A nice catch-and-run by Evan Engram on third-and-8 advanced the Jaguars inside the red zone, and this time, Trevor Lawrence made sure they took advantage. Rolling to his right, he delivered a strike to Zay Jones in the end zone. That's a touchdown.

Jaguars 13, Chargers 0, 10:23 2nd.

4:57 p.m. | Dawuane Smoot strip-sack forces fumble, Jaguars recover

That's a strip-sack! Devin Lloyd almost got Justin Herbert on second down, and on third down, Dawuane Smoot pounded the quarterback and jarred the football loose. Foye Oluokun recovered for the Jags. That's now eight takeaways in fewer than two and a half games.

Wow.

The Jaguars take over inside the Chargers' 30.

4:50 p.m. | No progress after pick, but Riley Patterson kicks second Jaguars field goal

More red zone woes for the Jaguars. A Zay Jones end-around gained zero yards, Trevor Lawrence threw it out of the end zone under heavy pressure on second down and then had a pass swatted down on third down. No James Robinson carries on that possession?

The drive that started at the 5 ends in another 23-yard field goal from Riley Patterson. The Jaguars get points out of the Devin Lloyd interception, but it could have been something more.

Jaguars 6, Chargers 0, 13:52 2nd.

4:47 p.m. | Interception! Devin Lloyd picks it off

That's a pick! Can't blame Justin Herbert for this one: That should've been caught by his receiver, tailback Sony Michel, but after the football rattled around two sets of arms, Devin Lloyd grabs the ball and returns it to the Los Angeles 5.

The Jaguars are knocking on the door again.

4:45 p.m. | Riley Patterson kicks field goal for Jaguars lead

The deep passing game isn't working, but Trevor Lawrence is keeping the offense moving with shorter tosses. The Jaguars advanced across midfield for the second time, and converted on third down with a short completion from Lawrence to James Robinson. Then came another conversion to the elusive Jamal Agnew, followed by a Robinson rush inside the 20.

But the Jaguars' drive stalled out, once again, in the red zone. Lawrence overthrew the end zone on second down and Marvin Jones was downed short of the end zone on third down. The Jaguars kicked the field goal this time, a Riley Patterson 23-yarder for an early lead.

The injury-plagued Chargers also lost another key player, pass rusher Joey Bosa, on that drive.

Jaguars 3, Chargers 0, 14:57 2nd.

4:41 p.m. | END OF FIRST QUARTER: Jaguars 0, Chargers 0

No score yet... but the Jaguars have fourth down at the Los Angeles 5.

4:27 p.m. | Jags stop Chargers with three-and-out

Another solid possession for the Jaguars' D. They've been getting steady pressure on Justin Herbert, forcing a holding penalty, and on third down, Jacksonville downed Austin Ekeler short of the sticks on a third-and-2. Credit Tre Herndon, Travon Walker and Rayshawn Jenkins with key contributions on that play.

Still 0-0 in this one.

4:20 p.m. | Jaguars stuffed in short yardage

Not quite what the Jaguars were hoping for on that drive. Travis Etienne had a 6-yard run, but on third and inches, the Chargers stacked up James Robinson for no gain. Logan Cooke's punt pins Justin Herbert and Los Angeles back at around their own 15.

4:15 p.m. | Darious Williams makes the PBU, Chargers go three-and-out

That's Creekside High School's own Darious Williams making the play on third down, racing across to swat the ball away from receiver Mike Williams over the middle. That means a three-and-out for Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles offense. The Jags take over inside their own 20 after a punt.

4:11 p.m. | Jaguars turn over on downs despite Robinson's big run

That's James Robinson on the move. The Jaguars' third-year running back took a handoff to the left side for a gain of 20 yards to highlight the opening possession.

The drive stalled out there. Doug Pederson decided to go for fourth-and-6, but Trevor Lawrence couldn't quite connect with Marvin Jones. The Chargers take over with prime field position.

4:05 p.m. | Jaguars, Chargers ready for kickoff

Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville offense will be on the field first.

3:50 p.m. | James Robinson, Travis Etienne need more big plays against Chargers

The Jaguars had difficulty running the football last Sunday against Indianapolis, especially in the fourth quarter.

3:10 p.m. | Gene Frenette: Jaguars aim to follow Chargers' blueprint of being fun, explosive offense

When Zay Jones was contemplating his next NFL destination during the March free agency period, he made his decision separately from teammate Christian Kirk, even though the Jaguars’ receivers share the same agent (Zeke Sandhu).

It turns out both were on the same wavelength, specifically about a potential franchise transformation under first-year coach Doug Pederson. Jones passed up a little more money from the Chicago Bears to sign with the Jaguars, who gave a mother lode contract to Kirk (four-year, $72 million).

Two games into the Pederson era, both Jones and Kirk feel the suspicions they had six months ago about the play-calling acumen of a Super Bowl-winning coach bringing juice to a dull offense is starting to resonate. | Read more --Gene Frenette

3 p.m.| 'He can do everything': Jaguars will be challenged Sunday against Chargers' Derwin James

It would almost be insulting to someone who watches football to call Los Angeles Chargers (1-1) defender Derwin James by his position — safety.

For the Jaguars (1-1), they'll need to prepare in an unconventional fashion for their Week 3 contest against L.A. this Sunday, and act as though James plays all of the positions on the field because, frankly, he pretty much does. | Read more --Demetrius Harvey

That's the big news today: The Los Angeles Chargers quarterback, battling a rib cartilage injury, will be active for today's game against the Jaguars.

2:30 p.m. | Western trips bring trouble for Jaguars

The team's first trip out west came in 1996, the second year of the franchise's existence, facing off against the then-Oakland Raiders. They lost 17-3, but won the following year's bout against the Raiders 20-9 in the team's trip out to the Pacific time zone.

In all, Jacksonville has won just three games out west, all against Oakland, splitting the West Coast series with the team, 3-3. | Read more --Demetrius Harvey

2:20 p.m. | 'So what, now what?': Jaguars travel to the West Coast to take on Los Angeles Chargers

Jacksonville (1-1) is entering this week on a positive note, still feeling good about their previous victory against the Indianapolis Colts. The team pitched a shutout, winning 24-0. The Chargers (1-1), on the other hand, are coming off of a tough loss against the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday Night Football.

Traveling to the West Coast, the Jaguars have won just 3 out of 18 total contests against the Chargers, Los Angeles Rams, Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders, Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers. | Read more --Demetrius Harvey
