Yesterday, Lourdes Leon stepped out in downtown New York look alongside her tattooed beau, wearing a black spaghetti-strap tank top that revealed just a sliver of midriff and a navel piercing, along with a miniskirt also in black spandex. Leon accessorized with a pair of white socks, roughed-up sneakers, and a Takashi Murakami x Louis Vuitton black monogrammed bag: a perfectly laid-back look for a sweltering day in the concrete jungle. Look closer, however, and you’ll notice two cross necklaces: could it be a nod to her mother Madonna’s Catholic upbringing?

It wouldn’t be the first time that Leon has referenced her mother’s iconic style, and, come to think of it, her look from head to toe carries more than an echo of Madonna’s signature late-’80s garb. Back in 1989, the Queen of Pop performed in Los Angeles wearing a pair of simple spandex Nike bicycle shorts and a bustier lace tank top, and when it comes to beauty—just like her mother—Leon has opted to proudly go the unshaven-underarm route, showing her God-given body hair au naturel, whether out on the red carpet or starring in a fashion campaign. Intentional or not, it’s always a refreshing delight to see Leon give a modern spin on her mother’s signatures.
