LSU, Loyola win grants for health training

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded nearly a million dollars in grants to Loyola University and the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center to help with health training and research.

Loyola's Nurse Faculty Loan Program will get a $933,271 grant to be used for advanced education nursing programs for graduates to serve as faculty in the School of Nursing.

Additionally, the LSU Health Science Center will receive a $43,889 grant for research on molecular bases of health disparities.

U.S. Sen. David Vitter, in a statement Monday, said the funding will strengthen and enhance Louisiana's higher education, helping the state "stay on the cutting edge in the medical field."
