A Man Has Barricaded Himself In A Trader Joe's After A Reported Shooting

Today, Trader Joe's employees nationwide are standing with their coworkers as they grieve the loss of store manager Melyda Corado. Last weekend, Melyda was killed and two other people injured inside a Silver Lake, CA Trader Joe's store. As reported by the LA Times, what started as a family dispute ended in a car chase and gunfire exchange between police and, Gene Atkins, 28, who ran into the Trader Joe's during the incident.

To honor the Silver Lake store and community, Crew Members around the country are wearing red shirts and ribbons made from Trader Joe's paper bags, the company wrote on Instagram. In a post, Trader Joe's thanks its customers and crew for their continued love and support.

Community members have also set up a memorial for Melyda outside the California grocery store, leaving candles, flowers, and colorful messages on display.

UPDATE: JULY 21 at 10:33 pm: A woman was killed inside the Trader Joe's where a man had barricaded himself tonight, according to CNN. The suspect has since turned himself over to police.

According to the LAPD Twitter, the woman who was killed was struck gunfire that was exchanged between police and the suspect. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

ORIGINAL POST: July 21 at 9:09 pm There's a frightening situation unfolding inside a Trader Joe's grocery story in Los Angeles tonight. CNN is reporting that a man has barricaded himself inside the store.

According to police, the events began at 1:30 PM with a shooting - an elderly woman and a young lady were said to have been the victims. LAPD Officer Mike Lopez told CNN that the suspect drove off under police pursuit (exchanging fire with officers) until he crashed his car and ran into the Trader Joe's, which is located on Hyperion Avenue in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles.

CNN reported that customers could be seen running out of the store, but it was not immediately clear how many people might still be inside. Video of the scene showed people climbing out of a store window down a rope ladder, while armed officers carried shields and swarmed the area.
