Finally, a moment of quality and Greenwood has his first senior goal for United. That was a lovely finish, looked like he was going to chop back on his left foot but instead he went on the outside on his right and slipped his finish through Eric's leg. Great moment for the 17-year-old.

Rashford leading the fight again, far too dexterous and skilful for the Astana defenders who have to foul him. Free-kick a good 30 yards out and fairly central -good effort from Rashford, but despite the dip on the strike it clips the roof of the net. Still no breakthrough.

Another corner on the way from United. Gomes goes across to take it. Pinball in the penalty area, and the ball drops for Greenwood six yards out but his deflected effort dribbles past the near post.

The pattern of the first half has been quickly re-established. Astana packing bodies behind the ball, and their manager has instructed Rotariu to follow Dalot all the way back so it is a back six now.

Greenwood tries another shot in the manner of his early effort, cutting back inside on his left foot but once more he does not wrap his foot around it enough. There's an elegance about Greenwood when he strikes the ball though, there tends to be with left-footers (although Greenwood is almost two-footed).

Patient play by United who must have stung together more than 20 passes but at the end of the move Dalot's cross was way too heavy.

A warning for United there as Astana break but taking a shot early does not work out and Romero claims with ease.
Astana then win a corner and deliver with menace but United clear and have a rare chance to counter. Chong cannot find Rashford tough as Astana survive.

United looked a little open for a second there, buy Astana do not have the quality to make it count. This is like a training exercise, but the attackers are not making much progress against the defenders. Tomasevic and the other Astana defenders have defender their box well and are strong on crosses.

That was better interplay around the edge of the area as Gomes feeds Dalot with a cute through ball between two defenders but his cross fails to pick out a United players.

Astana are not really present as an attacking force, so I cannot see the point of Matic in a game like this. United need much more vision and speed of thought in that part of the pitch.

Some nice set-piece delivery by Gomes but nobody has got their head on one tonight. Good point raised by Robbie Savage - yes, I know - that it is a sign of McTominay's stature that he is rested for Sunday's trip to West Ham.
Not too much happening. We all know United are getting through this group, the lack of jeopardy is a buzzkill. Bad enough in the Champions League but the Europa League group-stages really are turgid.

Flag up against Rashford but he volleys wide in any case. Moments later, the flag stayed down and Rashford should have scored. It was actually a mis-hit cross from Rojo that lopped over the defence but Rashford stuck his foot out and put it straight at Eric. Quite a popular name on this side of Manchester, Eric.

Christ alive, Phil Jones. Gets himself in a right mess dealing with a simple punt upfield and Rotariu spins him and looks to be through on Romero's goal. To give Jones due credit he does recover to sprint back and get a block in.
United have a free-kick at the other end, but Gomes hits the wall.

It is a back five for Astana and a midfield four stationed in front of them. Very little outball and United are finding it easy to regain possession whenever they do lose it.
Ooooh, that was lovely from Rashford and Greenwood. Rashford with the backheel around the corner at the edge of the box from Greenwood, who took an early shot from the right corner of the box with his left foot. Lots of power but not quite enough bend it flies wide of the far post.

First big chance as a United corner falls kindly for Rashford at the near post. Less than six-yards out, it sits up on the volley for him but Eric dives across to make a great save.

Little to report, Astana just starting to settle down on the ball and draw the sting from United's start. Solskjaer's team need to keep the tempo up and stop the home crowd slipping into torpor.
Rashford spins in behind but he cannot quite pluck the long ball over the top out of the sky. Nice idea.

Not a bad experiment for Solskjaer this given United's struggles against deep defences in the Premier League. They are lethal on the counter-attack but do lack creativity and rhythmic passing from midfield in these type of match.
Astana get a chance to push up the pitch. They have a throw in deep in United territory but again it comes to nothing.

Rashford's free-kick is deflected over for a corner. All United as you would expect in the opening exchanges.
They are called into some defending though, but Romero is sharp off his line to sweep up behind his defenders.
Chong tests Astana down the left, and the goalkeeper Eric palms his cross behind for a corner that comes to nothing.

What an effort from Fred! Under no pressure 30 yards out he lets fly with his left foot and the ball crashes against the ball. Six inches lower and the goalkeeper would have had no chance. Fred was a figure of fun last season, but his performance off the bench against Leicester was quite positive. And let's be honest, you do not need to be a world-beater to get in this midfield.

Solskjaer puts faith in green shoots of youth
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will unleash Mason Greenwood in Manchester United's Europa League opener against Astana, with the 1999 treble hero saying the 17-year-old is already one of the best finishers he has ever seen.
After two years back at European football's top table, the Old Trafford giants are preparing to kick off a gruelling Europa League campaign at home to the perennial Kazakh champions.
United lifted the trophy when they last played in the competition in 2016-17, when manager Jose Mourinho's side bulldozed their way through to the final with an experienced squad.
But Solskjaer will change tack by trusting youth, with Greenwood's starting role the most eye-catching news heading into the Group L encounter.
"He is still very young, Mason, but he's maturing," Manchester United manager Solskjaer said. "He's developed so much in the last six months since I came in.
"I remember the kid who just wanted to play with mates in the under-18s. And now he's knocking on a door, he's ready to play these games.
"For me, he has been in the under-21s with England, he's tasting it more and more. And his appetite for football must be growing.
"I just don't want to put too much pressure on him, apart from, 'go out there and enjoy yourself'.
"Work hard, close down, because when the ball lands in your feet I know you're going to score anyway. I know you'll make the right finish. Keeper might make a fantastic save but he's one of the best finishers I've seen.
"It's just that enjoyment, express yourself, go out at Old Trafford because there'll be 11 Astana players living the dream tomorrow.
"It must be one of the biggest games of their careers for some of these players, but I want it to be a memorable one for our players as well and Mason is one of them."
Solskjaer has confirmed fellow academy graduate Axel Tuanzebe, 21, will be in the line-up against Astana, 28 months since last starting a match for United at Old Trafford.
A knock sees Daniel James join Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw on the sidelines, while Fred comes into midfield and back-up goalkeeper Sergio Romero gets the nod ahead of David De Gea.
