How are the two teams faring?

It has been a couple of months to forget for Manchester United fans. With just two wins from eight games, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has the unwanted record of overseeing the club's worst start to a season for 30 years.

Despite that, the hierarchy is intent on giving Solskjaer time to turn around the club's fortunes and a victory at Old Trafford against arch-rivals Liverpool would go some way towards doing so.

United’s dismal 1-0 defeat at Newcastle last time out saw them slump to 12th in the table, just two points above the relegation zone. They have not won a game in five and have failed to score in three of those matches.

To make matters worse, United midfielder Paul Pogba has been ruled out with an ankle problem, while goalkeeper David De Gea faces a scan and is a major injury doubt.

It is a totally different story at Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp's team have maintained a 100 per cent record so far in their eight league matches this campaign, and they already have an eight-point lead over Manchester City at the top of the table.

Despite that, Liverpool have not enjoyed much success at Old Trafford recently. They have won there only once since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement - during the 2013-14 campaign when David Moyes was still in charge.

They should be boosted by the return of goalkeeper Alisson Becker, who has not featured since the opening day of the season when he sustained a calf tear against Norwich City.

What are they saying?

Ed Woodward:

"The middle section of last season, after Ole's arrival, feels most relevant to what we want to achieve and where we want to be," the executive vice-chairman said, having publicly pledged his faith in Solskjaer three weeks ago.

"We saw a team playing fast, fluid football, with a clear representation of the style and philosophy the manager wants.

"Ole has also instilled the discipline back into an environment where we may have lacked it in recent years.

"He is building a squad that respects the club's history, in which players work hard and respect their team-mates. No-one is bigger than the club.

"The changes we saw over the summer have resulted in a very young squad.

"But it's also a squad, with the players and the culture, that provides a base camp for us to build and grow from as we start our new journey."

Jurgen Klopp:

"I am 100 per cent aware of the strength of Manchester United, I expect their best possible line-up," he added.

"I think Ole said 'No chance for De Gea and Pogba'. Today it is 'Maybe' and tomorrow it is '100 per cent'.

"That's how all these games are played. No problem with that but I am old enough, I am experienced enough, to judge these things in the right way.

"The less the opposing manager knows about your line-up the better it is, so that's an advantage.

"I am four years in England and it is still strange how little you know about whether a player is fit or not - in Germany we allow the press four or five times a week to watch training so you cannot hide anything."

What are the odds?

Manchester United win - 7/2
Draw - 3/1
Liverpool win - 3/4

What's our prediction?

The way things have gone so far this campaign, this could get ugly for Manchester United. Liverpool have looked unstoppable, while Solskjaer cannot seem to stop his side shipping points. Prediction: 0-3
