Mandy Moore on Marriage to Ryan Adams: ‘I Felt Like I Was Drowning’
Mandy Moore is opening up about her marriage to singer Ryan Adams in the wake of the recent sexual misconduct allegations against him.
Moore — who was married to Adams from March 2009 until January 2015 — sat down for an interview for the “WTF With Marc Maron” podcast that was released on Monday.
“I was living my life for him,” Moore said. “I had no sense of self. I was imperceptible. I was so small in my own world.”
She continued, “I felt like I was drowning. It was so untenable and unsustainable and I was so lonely. I was so sad … I knew that this wasn’t the person I was supposed to be with. I knew that I wasn’t the person I was meant to be.”
Mandy Moore described Adams’ allegedly controlling behavior and the effect it had on her career, saying, “It’s not like I completely stopped working. I would do things here or there, but it became abundantly clear while I was working, things would completely fall apart at home … there was just a constant stream of trying to pay attention to this person who needed me and wouldn’t let me do anything else.”
She says that six months after she ended the relationship, she landed her role on “This Is Us.”
Last November, Mandy Moore married singer Taylor Goldsmith.
After the New York Times article about Ryan Adams’ alleged misconduct came out, Moore supported his accusers on Instagram.
“Speaking your truth can be painful and triggering but it’s always worth it,” she wrote. “My heart is with all women who have suffered any sort of trauma or abuse. You are seen and heard.”
Multiple female singers accusing Adams of being manipulative and controlling, and several claimed the singer-songwriter asked for sexual favors and in exchange, he promised to propel their music careers.
Moore contributed to the article, speaking out about their marriage and calling him “controlling” and “abusive.”
The actress says he would “discourage” her from working with other producers and once they were finished working on a song together, he’d “replace her with other female artists.”
Adams denied the accusations against him via Twitter.
“I am not a perfect man and I have made many mistakes. To anyone I have ever hurt, however unintentionally, I apologize deeply and unreservedly,” he said.
He added, “The picture that this article paints is upsettingly inaccurate. Some of its details are misrepresented; some are exaggerated; some are outright false. I would never have inappropriate interactions with someone I thought was underage. Period.”
Adams concluded by saying, “As someone who has always tried to spread joy through my music and my life, hearing that some people believe I caused them pain saddens me greatly. I am resolved to work to be the best man I can be. And I wish everyone compassion, understanding and healing.”
