Where does Manny Machado's $300 million contract rank among sports' richest deals?

Manny Machado broke the free-agent stalemate Tuesday by reportedly agreed to a 10-year, $300 million deal with the San Diego Padres. While the full details of the contract aren’t available yet, he stands to earn $30 million a year manning the hot corner at Petco Park.

It’s an enormous contract, one that Machado has waited his entire career (and entire life) to sign. But where does it fall on the list of the richest sports contracts of all time? Read on to find out if Machado’s new contract rises above all the rest.

5. Alex Rodriguez, 10 years, $252 million

In the year 2000, Jennifer Lopez’s future boyfriend signed a massive contract. A-Rod left the Seattle Mariners after the 2000 season and signed a 10-year, $252 million deal with the Texas Rangers. At the time, it was the richest contract in baseball history. An annual average value of $25.2 million over 10 years lands A-Rod’s Rangers deal at the No. 5 spot.

4. Alex Rodriguez, 10 years, $275 million

It’s A-Rod again, with the second (and final) massive contract of his career. Rodriguez opted out of his contract with the Rangers after the 2007 season, and the New York Yankees made it worth his while. He signed a 10-year deal for $275 million, beating his Rangers deal by $23 million in total and $2.3 million a year. That earns Rodriguez’s Yankees contract, and its AAV of $27.5 over 10 years, the No. 4 spot.

3. Manny Machado, 10 years, $300 million

Machado did what he set out to do. His reported $300 million contract with the San Diego Padres is the richest MLB free-agent contract in American sports history, and it’ll pay him $30 million a year for the next decade. But that doesn’t quite reach the heights of the contract at the No. 2 spot …

2. Giancarlo Stanton, 13 years, $325 million

This is the deal Machado and Bryce Harper have spent the entire offseason trying to beat. Giancarlo Stanton’s earth-shattering 13-year, $325 million contract extension with the Miami Marlins set baseball on fire in 2014. It was the richest contract in team sports history, paying out $25 million a year over an unfathomable 13 years. Stanton’s deal beats Machado’s in total money and years, landing it in the No. 2 spot on this list.

1. Canelo Álvarez, 5 years, $365 million

Boxer Canelo Álvarez signed a massive five-year, $365 million, 11-fight contract with the London-based streaming service DAZN in October 2018, giving him an annual payout of $73 million. Even though baseball populates the rest of this list, the chances that any baseball player ever beats Álvarez’s contract — or even comes close to earning a $73 million annual salary — are slim to none. But considering that Machado just got majorly paid, he probably doesn’t mind coming in at second place on this list.
