How Many Chorus Limited (NZSE:CNU) Shares Did Insiders Buy, In The Last Year?

It is not uncommon to see companies perform well in the years after insiders buy shares. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Chorus Limited (NZSE:CNU).

Do Insider Transactions Matter?

It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, most countries require that the company discloses such transactions to the market.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares. For example, a Columbia University study found that 'insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers'.

Chorus Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Independent Director Murray Jordan for NZ$400k worth of shares, at about NZ$5.10 per share. We do like to see buying, but this purchase was made at well below the current price of NZ$6.53. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

In the last twelve months Chorus insiders were buying shares, but not selling. They paid about NZ$4.17 on average. To my mind it is good that insiders have invested their own money in the company. However, you should keep in mind that they bought when the share price was meaningfully below today's levels. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by individuals) over the last 12 months, below. If you want to know exactly who sold, for how much, and when, simply click on the graph below!

Does Chorus Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Based on our data, Chorus insiders have about 0.1% of the stock, worth approximately NZ$4.1m. We prefer to see high levels of insider ownership.

What Might The Insider Transactions At Chorus Tell Us?

The fact that there have been no Chorus insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. On a brighter note, the transactions over the last year are encouraging. The transactions are fine but it'd be more encouraging if Chorus insiders bought more shares in the company. Of course, the future is what matters most.
