We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. On the other hand, we'd be remiss not to mention that insider sales have been known to precede tough periods for a business. So before you buy or sell CRA International, Inc. (NASDAQ:CRAI), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.

What Is Insider Selling?

It is perfectly legal for company insiders, including board members, to buy and sell stock in a company. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.

Insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing. But logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise.'

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At CRA International

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the President, Paul Maleh, sold US$1.2m worth of shares at a price of US$50.32 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$38.22). So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.

In the last twelve months insiders netted US$2.2m for 45000 shares sold. CRA International insiders didn't buy any shares over the last year.
