We’ve lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So shareholders might well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in OraSure Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:OSUR).
What Is Insider Selling?
It’s quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, rules govern insider transactions, and certain disclosures are required.
We don’t think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. For example, a Columbia University study found that ‘insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers’.

OraSure Technologies Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by Independent Director Charles Patrick for US$130k worth of shares, at about US$16.29 per share. That is hardly a positive sign, even though it took place above the latest price (US$11.90). So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price. Charles Patrick was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.
