In the following excerpt from the Investing Strategies Report, an expert portfolio manager discusses her portfolio-construction strategy and investment philosophy:
TWST: Do you invest globally as well as domestically?
Ms. Long: We tend to stay in U.S. companies and ADRs. A lot of our companies have 40% to 60% of their earnings from overseas growth, but we do not invest directly in international markets because our clients are domestic and we are not currency experts.
Because we are in San Antonio, we have clients who ask about investing in Mexico. There is a lot of cross-border economic activity and Mexico has been doing well, but we point out to clients there are also risks to investing there, whether it's geopolitical or drug-cartel crime.
TWST: What are some of the major trends you are watching right now, and what are the opportunities they are presenting for you?
Ms. Long: A couple of the bigger themes would be energy independence, Big Data and the migration to mobile, whether it's information or payments. We are also following new solutions to ongoing health care challenges, whether that's how do we deal with patient information, the aging population, innovations in medical devices and drugs, demand for health care from emerging economies and rising costs.
TWST: Would you give us some examples of companies that fit those themes?
Ms. Long: An example of the mobile payments theme would be eBay (EBAY) and Starbucks (SBUX). eBay has PayPal that they're rolling out to more retailers, and also physical stores that make it easier to have payments over the Web or your mobile device...
