Marti G. Cummings is making LGBTQ+ history once again.

The drag artist, activist, and former City Council candidate has been invited by President Joe Biden and the First Lady of the United States, Dr. Jill Biden, to attend a historic event at the White House.

Cummings took to Twitter and shared the invitation to attend the signing of the Respect for Marriage Act at the White House and wrote the following:

“To be a non-binary drag artist invited to the White House is something I never imagined would happen. Thank you President & Dr. Biden for inviting me to this historic bill signing. Grateful doesn’t begin to express the emotions I feel.”

A few Democratic politicians have included drag artists in certain events in the past. Of note, Shea Couleé campaigned for Elizabeth Warren during her 2020 presidential run and was seen side-by-side with the politician during that campaign. And in 2022, Shangela became the first drag queen to attend a U.S. Vice President event.

And yet, it is a massive deal for Cummings to be invited to the White House for the signing of this historic bill. After all, the President of the United States is validating and including a nonbinary drag artist who doesn’t come from RuPaul’s Drag Race fame and who has been doing the work through activism and campaigning to help the LGBTQ+ community.

We couldn’t be happier for Cummings and can’t wait to see them at the White House!
