Having earned $676 million here at home and $2 billion globally, Avengers: Infinity War is the undisputed king of the summer box office. Marvel’s all-star epic will soon arrive on home video, and in advance of that conquest, we have a sneak peek at one of its most eagerly anticipated bonus features.
Exclusive to Avengers: Infinity War’s digital release will be a director’s roundtable discussion that includes Joe and Anthony Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War), James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Ryan Coogler (Black Panther), Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Iron Man 2), Peyton Reed (Ant-Man, Ant-Man and the Wasp), Joss Whedon (Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron) and — via Skype — Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok). It is, in short, a lineup comprising the leading artists behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and in the above portion of their lengthy chat, Gunn talks about how Rocket Raccoon (voiced by Bradley Cooper) was inspired by Frankenstein’s monster, since both are creatures that have been patched together and find themselves alone and angry at their condition. The Russos then discuss how they took the baton from Gunn, creatively speaking, and continued that idea of Rocket in Infinity War — and why, consequently, they chose to pair Rocket with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, another loner grappling with loss and despair.
It’s a brief window into the unique collaborative process that makes the Marvel Cinematic Universe work like no other. Check out our exclusive clip above, and see the entire roundtable conversation — as well as the film itself — when Avengers: Infinity War premieres on digital HD on July 31, followed by its Blu-ray and DVD bow on Aug. 14.
