Music mogul Master P is coming for Hollywood's bottom line: 'It's time for the underdogs to take over'

Master P revolutionized the music business in the 1990s by making sure he owned as much of what he created as possible. Now he’s hoping to disrupt the movie business with some of the same tactics.

His new comedy “I Got the Hook-Up 2” hits theaters July 12, and he hopes it will serve as a wake-up call to the powers that be in Hollywood about owning and promoting your own content. “This is a movement. It's not just a movie. This is a real movement,” he told Jen Rogers on Yahoo Finance’s My Three Cents.

Master P has never been content to simply be a rapper or an actor. He’s a businessman who sees an opportunity in peak content. He and his son Romeo financed “I Got the Hook-Up 2,” and they are expecting big returns. “This is me taking what I did in music in the '90s and taking it to the movie world and saying, you know what? Let's take over. Because I tell people all the time as a minority, whether it's African Americans and Latinos, we only own 5% of ... the movie business. Five percent. We have no ownership in this.”

For Master P, ownership is how generational wealth is created. “I feel like it's time for the underdogs to take over. At least get a little piece of the pie when we talk about business. We're talking about business, some diversity and nobody could make these type of movies like us. So we should own them.”

Master P is bringing his guerrilla marketing skills to bear as well for the movie, but this time instead of selling music from the trunk of his car, he’s harnessing social media. The movie is loaded with influencers and actors who have huge social media followings.

“Hollywood is going to change the way they make films behind this movie because we took 200 million followers with the stars that we have ... They normally spend millions and millions of dollars to market, but we could touch 200 million people at the push of a button.”

The movie’s monster cast will no doubt help with the social media blitz. “We're up for the Guinness Book of Records for 126 actors and actresses with speaking roles, never been done.”
