The Sacramento, California-based company said it had a loss of $5.34 per share. Losses, adjusted for non-recurring costs and severance costs, were $2.74 per share.
The media company and owner of The Kansas City Star posted revenue of $180.3 million in the period.
The company's shares closed at $2.99. A year ago, they were trading at $9.72.
