The BAFTA red carpet may be a show of Time’s Up solidarity in all black, but the highlight from Sunday at London Fashion Week couldn’t have been more colourful. Luxury Spanish label Delpozo made its London debut with a rainbow of azure blue, canary yellow and a whole symphony of pinks: watermelon, pesto-bismol, raspberry and neon.

While the brand may not be familiar to you, its dresses are some of the most photographed around. Part of the schedule at New York fashion week for the last five years, Delpozo has become a go-to for Melania Trump. She wore a cocoon-sleeved coat dress (priced at $2950) in fuchsia for a public appearance in September, and another iteration in deep purple in Seoul in November, before choosing a custom made embellished black gown for the White House’s official Christmas portrait. Queen Letizia, of designer Josep Font’s native Spain, has also championed the label.

And they’re not the only fans. Stylist Law Roach, who dresses Celine Dion, Naomi Campbell and Zendaya, was seated on the front row: no doubt he’s hoping that the Oscars’ red carpet dress code will allow for bright colours and not follow the all-black precedent. So, too, is Font, who laughs when I suggest designing black dresses to suit the current climate. “I like a lot of colour,” he tells me after the show, “it lights your face.”

Delpozo’s designs are both incredibly feminine - often featuring bows and abstract flowers - and sculptural in silhouette, making for flattering dresses that photograph particularly well - a must for red carpet outings. Trailing strapless gowns in pink and blue would be elegant choices, while a more adventurous dresser like Dion might choose the rainbow sequins, sewn on in circles like the scales of a fish- or in this case, a mermaid.

For most of us, Delpozo’s price tags put these pieces firmly in the fantasy category. But for those with bottomless pockets, like the FLOTUS, the brand is the ultimate in ladylike glamour. Font gives the women who wear his dresses all the credit, saying “for me, glamour is an attitude, not age, not physique. It’s an aura.” But a Delpozo dress certainly helps.
