Meghan Markle Loves This $9 Drugstore Mascara So Much, She Recommended It to Her Former Makeup Artist
Run — don't walk — to your nearest CVS/Rite Aid/Walgreens, because Meghan Markle's go-to mascara has just been revealed. On Friday, her former makeup artist, Lydia Sellers, talked to HELLO! about the Duchess of Sussex's favorite lash-enhancing product, and it's apparently a $9 drugstore mascara.
"Meghan actually introduced me to a drugstore mascara, Maybelline New York Lash Sensational Luscious Mascara," Sellers told HELLO! "I keep it stocked in my kit now at all times thanks to her! This mascara really helps to amplify your lashes and polish off the entire look. It's great for full volume and lengthening, the formula is super hydrating. I love how it builds, and that the price point is accessible for all budgets."
Unfortunately, you might need to be born with Markle-caliber lashes to pull it off. The mascara has mixed reviews on both the Ulta and Maybelline New York websites, with an average of around 3 stars. But all is not lost. If you still want to support Markle's drugstore mascara brand, there's another Maybelline New York Lash Sensational mascara that's been receiving rave reviews (with photographic evidence) on Reddit, and it's also $9. That would be the Maybelline New York Lash Sensational Washable Mascara, which Allure can vouch for. Although it's a little weirdly shaped, its lop-sided composition is part of what makes it work: The hairy side gives volume, while the thin side creates definition, gets rid of excess mascara, and keeps your lashes from clumping together.
As for how to get the full Markle face, and not just her lashes, Sellers had some other products in mind besides the Maybelline mascara: "I used Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation (a mixture of shade 6.25 with drop of 5.5 for depth), with a drop of Charlotte Tilbury Wonder Glow Primer mixed in — this creates a pearlescent, healthy glow that looks like it's coming from within," she told HELLO! "I went in with a damp Beauty Blender Sponge to sheer it out and ensure Meghan's freckles were popping!"
"Meghan loves a highlighter from RMS, a Kohl Eyeliner pencil she consistently uses from M.A.C., and a Face Cream by La Mer," the makeup artist added, all of which combine to form the Duchess's favorite look. "Meghan favors a less-is-more approach to beauty; fresh, dewy skin to show off her natural tone and freckles; thick, lush lashes; a hint of color on the lips," Sellers said. "At night we'd amp it up with a sultry, slightly darker smoky eye or sometimes a bold pop of color on her lips. She is a very classic, subdued glam kind of gal, which I truly admire."
Elsewhere in the interview, Sellers reminisced on her time working with Markle on Suits ("Meghan is the type of girl with many talents. She is someone that is ‘in the know’ when it comes to products, tips, tricks, and trends. Working with her was always a collaborative effort.") and talked about her gorgeous wedding day look by Daniel Martin. "Classic, timeless, and glowing — a true romance to her look," she said, adding, "This look is all about the skin taking center stage. It's a look Meghan feels the most natural and authentic in: Dewy skin and freckles with a glowing flushed cheek, her eyebrows perfectly defined and her eyes amplified with earthy tones. Volume in the lash with layered mascara. All balanced with a subtle, nude lip. Subdued, elegant glamour at its finest."
