Meghan Markle needs to step up and take the spotlight off her father, says royal correspondent

Meghan Markle‘s family has continued to hit headlines since her engagement to Prince Harry was announced.

Whether it’s her father, Thomas Markle, discussing details of a private phone call with Prince Harry or her half-sister Samantha Markle taking to Twitter to claim Meghan would be to blame if Thomas died, Meghan’s family haven’t held back when talking to the press.

The solution? Meghan, says royal correspondent Richard Palmer.

“What I’d like to see is [Meghan] taking up the cudgels now on behalf of some charities, some big issues. She has the power to make a real difference in the world,” Richard tells Kate Thornton during episode six of ‘The Royal Box’.

“I think that’s the way to change the conversation, to move it on and step it up.”

Swiftly after the royal wedding on 19 May, the Duchess’ profile page was set live, outlining the former actress’ new responsibilities.

Stating Meghan will “perform Royal duties in support of The Queen through engagements at home and overseas, alongside a growing portfolio of charitable work and patronages”, the page also flagged her commitment to feminism.

The palace added that the Duchess of Sussex will become a patron of the Royal Foundation, an organisation William and Harry founded in 2011 to pursue charitable interests.

But despite carrying out a number of engagements with Prince Harry – and one with the Queen – since beginning royal life, we’re yet to see Meghan Markle get stuck into any charitable work.

She’s made 17 public appearances since marrying Harry, but two were weddings, two were polo matches, one was Wimbledon and another Prince Louis’ christening.

Meghan claimed to be keen to “hit the ground running,” in her engagement interview in November 2017. However, she added that she might be “doing it quietly behind the scenes.”

And it has been less than three months since her big day, so she’s likely still winding down and settling into her new home and life in the limelight.

Stepping up her public appearances and charity involvement could well provide the world with another narrative and give both the newlyweds and the Kensington Palace press team the time to smooth things over with the Markle family.

Currently, it doesn’t seem like either the palace or the Duke and Duchess of Sussex know how to handle the situation.

“The Thomas Markle interview is systematic of [the royal family’s] lack of understanding of the press,” says Claudia Joseph, another royal expert who also appears on episode six of ‘The Royal Box’.

Richard suggests Meghan and Harry need to “build bridges” with Thomas – but also be confident he won’t leak everything they’ve discussed.

For this, they need support from the palace.

“This story will be a festering sore if the palace doesn’t do anything,” Richard concludes.
