Melania Trump Chooses Clinton China For State Dinner Despite President's Attacks on Former Opponent

First lady Melania Trump has chosen china for the state dinner she’s hosting for French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday that may not be pleasing to her husband President Donald Trump.

Much of the food will be served on plates from former President Bill Clinton and his wife Hillary Clinton, who was Donald Trump’s opponent in the 2016 presidential election and whom he has continued to attack.

“The color scheme is cream and gold and the china settings consist of the Clinton china for the baseplate, along with both Bush (43) and Clinton china for the dinner service,” according to details released by the White House Monday.

In a video Melania Trump tweeted on her “months of preparations” for the state dinner, the base plates are gold-trimmed and appear to resemble the Clinton plates.

In 2000, then-first lady Hillary Clinton approved commissioning the china to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the White House. It was the first service plate to feature an image of the White House in the center.

Using Clinton china appears to be Melania Trump’s personal choice. She did not seek out an event planner for her first state dinner as most administrations in the recent past have, and instead took it in her own hands.

“She has amazing taste, which makes things very, very easy,” social secretary Rickie Niceta, who is helping Melania Trump, told The Washington Post.

A rack of lamb will be the main course to be served at the dinner, while a goat cheese gateau will be among the appetizers. It will be the first state dinner hosted by the Trumps, after the president became the first in almost a century not to hold one during his first year in office.

President Trump has repeatedly called his presidential election opponent “Crooked Hillary” and continued to criticize her long after his victory. On Tuesday, however, he will be forced to eat on a plate that Hillary Clinton commissioned, thanks to his wife.
