Actor Jay Thomas died of cancer Thursday at the age of 69. Thomas was best known for his roles on the sitcoms Cheers and on Murphy Brown. He won an Emmy for his portrayal of Jerry Gold on Murphy Brown in 1990 and 1991. Throughout his career, Thomas appeared on numerous TV shows, including Mork and Mindy, and films including Mr. Holland’s Opus. He had recently played Marty Grossman in Showtime’s Ray Donovan. He even had a running holiday tradition on The Late Show With David Letterman to knock a meatball off the top of a Christmas tree. Rest in peace, Jay Thomas. You will be missed.
