If you pay attention to Nürburgring spy photos and videos, you'll know that Mercedes-AMG has some fun stuff coming with its AMG GT sports car. People at AMG have told us for a while now that a GT Black Series is on its way, and at the L.A. Auto Show, we just learned that it'll be here soon.
Speaking to Road & Track at the L.A. show, AMG's global head of product management and sales, Michael Knöller confirmed that the GT Black Series would arrive next year. He described the GT Black Series as a "more extroverted" version of the GT and added that "it underlines the history and performance of the GT two door."
Knöller said the GT Black Series will get the powertrain, chassis and aerodynamic updates you expect from a Black Series, but declined to offer more specific information. We'll just have to wait.
In addition, Knöller confirmed that AMG will bring out a version of the GT Four Door with a plug-in hybrid V-8 drivetrain next year. Knöller says AMG is trying to demonstrate a wide range of offerings with the GT family, with everything from a performance plug-in to a track weapon. While he didn't offer a reveal date, he said the two will be shown close together, and both will reach production by the end of 2020.
The GT Four Door won't be AMG's first hybrid—that honor goes to its 53-series cars—but it will be the first plug-in from the tuning division. AMG first previewed the GT Four Door as an 805-hp hybrid V-8 concept back in 2017, but it wasn't a plug-in. A GT Four Door plug-in should be positioned perfectly to go up against the Porsche Panamera Turbo S e-Hybrid.
By contrast, the GT Black Series should revive some of the wild track-ready performance of the old SLS Black Series, one of the best cars to come from AMG. It seems 2020 will be a good year for the GT.
