The 2020 season has been one that Steven Matz would like to forget.

From a midseason move to the bullpen, to a stint on the IL due to a shoulder issue, things just haven’t seem to go Matz’s way.

And on a night where he was finally able to try to prove himself as a starter in a big game where the Mets needed innings from him, Matz’s down season continued in the 15-2 walloping by the Braves at Citi Field.

Matz went just 2.2 innings, surrendering six runs on eight hits, including a pair of Braves home runs, raising his ERA to 9.79 and dropping his record to 0-5.

“It’s been a frustrating year for me,” Matz said. “I came in to spring training 2.0, I was feeling great. I pitched great early on, and for it to go this way is frustrating.

“Before the game today, I threw a good bullpen. I was excited to start again, and for it to go this way again was really frustrating. Ultimately, I’ve got to just keep working hard and all I can do is just put my best foot forward.”

Luis Rojas echoed Matz’s thoughts about how the lefty came into the season on such a high note, pitching well through the spring and summer camps.

But Rojas also noted how Matz just hasn’t been able to avoid the big innings this season, which have ultimately hurt him the most.

“He had a really good spring training as well, and camp 2.0 here went really good for him, first outing of the season was really good, was a quality one as well,” Rojas said. “Out of the five innings that he’ll pitch, they’ve have two innings where they score runs on him, and now this outing from the first inning that’s happening to him, where he’s not able to execute his pitches, leaving a lot of them up where it’s not effective up in the zone, and that’s what happened tonight.

“His first outing out of the IL, everything for him was working before coming into this outing, into this start. The outing at the Alternative Site, the side session, everything that the pitching coaches here saw from him was good. Coming into the game tonight, it was just not what we were expecting. Just a lot of pitches up in the zone and not finishing his pitches.”
