LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- State officials next week will lease rights to develop oil and natural gas on more than 11,000 acres in 12 Michigan counties.
The Department of Natural Resources auction is scheduled for Oct. 28 in Lansing.
DNR minerals manager Mary Uptigrove says leasing mineral rights is an important part of the state's resources-based economy. Proceeds from the leases are used to buy land for public use, improve state and local parks, and protect fisheries and wildlife habitat.
Obtaining the lease to a particular parcel doesn't guarantee the right to drill for oil and gas there. The Department of Environmental Quality regulates drilling and operation of wells.
