Michigan's answer to Sister Jean: Jalen Rose's trash-talking grandma
Sister Jean has become the star of March Madness, and the face of Loyola Chicago’s improbable run to the Final Four. And neither she nor the Ramblers are going away anytime soon.
Which means, ahead of a Final Four matchup on Saturday, Michigan doesn’t just need an answer to Loyola’s crisp offense and energetic, disciplined defense; it needs an answer to its opponent’s 98-year-old team chaplain.
On Sunday, it got one.
Mary Belle Hicks, the 100-year-old grandmother of former Wolverine Jalen Rose, stepped up. Decked out in a Michigan hat and Michigan t-shirt, she called out Sister Jean ahead of the Final Four matchup between Loyola and Michigan:

“Sister Jean, it’s been a good ride, but it’s over Saturday,” she says in the video posted to Jalen’s Instagram account. “Go Blue!”
There are countless examples of Sister Jean’s popularity and fame, from the endless interviews to the bobbleheads to the other merchandise. But other elderly women trying to pick fights with her? Or at least talking trash to her? That has to be the best example yet.
