Midday index, ETF option volumes

Total option volume remains strong with 7 million contracts traded so far, as the typical indexes and ETFs dominate the action, according to optionMONSTER data systems.

Just shy of 1 million options have traded in the SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY), with 547,000 puts. Next up are the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) at 360,000 contracts, with puts outpacing calls by 2 to 1.

Following closely are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options at 342,000, also with puts eclipsing calls by 2 to 1. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options have turned over 315,000 times, with 181,000 calls.

The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 173,000 contracts changing hands, with puts slightly outnumbering calls. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has seen 151,000 trade, led by 98,000 puts. And the SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) just tops 100,000, evenly split between calls and puts.
