Midday index, ETF option volumes

Total option volume is quite low as just over 4 million contracts have traded so far today, with the typical indexes and ETFs dominating the action, according to optionMONSTER data systems.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 646,000 options changing hands, with puts outpacing calls by 2 to 1. Next up are the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) contracts at 193,000, also with a 2-to-1 put/call ratio.  The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) options have volume of 182,000, with calls outnumbering puts by 2 to 1. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) are close behind at 175,000, with 105,000 puts.

The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has 147,000 contracts moving, with 95,000 calls. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has seen 80,000 contracts turn over, with 58,000 puts. And the SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has 48,000 options traded, with 28,000 calls.
