Midday index, ETF option volumes

Total option volume is back to average at 5.3 million contracts so far today, with the primary indexes and ETFs topping the action, according to optionMONSTER data systems.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 630,000 options traded, led by 412,000 puts. Next up is the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) at 312,000 contracts, evenly split between calls and puts.

The S&P 500 Index (:SPX) options follow at 288,000. Puts outpace calls by 3 to 1, and the Weekly options are surpassing contracts in regular monthly expirations, which is unusual.

The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has 131,000 contracts changing hands, with 78,000 puts. The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) just tops 100,000 as calls eclipse puts by 2 to 1. Following is the CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) at 94,000, dominated by 77,000 calls.
