Midday index, ETF option volumes

Total option volume is relatively strong at 6.1 million contracts so far today, led by the big indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has 741,000 contracts changing hands, with 469,000 puts. The iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) has volume of 504,000 as puts outnumber calls by 6 to 1. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) is next at 361,000, led by 230,000 calls.

Following are the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (:IWM) at 258,000, the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) at 254,000, and the PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) at 210,000. All three have puts outpacing calls by 2 to 1.

The SPDR Gold Fund (GLD) has 91,000 options traded, with 59,000 calls. And the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has 81,000 with 48,000 calls.
