ROCHESTER, NY--(Marketwired - Sep 18, 2013) - Detroit Tigers' third baseman Miguel Cabrera has been selected as the Hickok Belt Award winner for the month of August 2013. His selection marks the second time he has received the monthly Hickok Belt Award honor this year. Voting was conducted by a select panel of members of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA). Cabrera continued to tear up opposing pitchers throughout August, hitting .356 for the month with 11 home runs, 31 RBI and a .733 slugging percentage. His 11 homeruns were the most by a Detroit Tiger in the month of August since Al Kaline hit 12 in 1957.
Other finalists for the month of August in order of how the NSSA voters ranked them included: Max Scherzer (baseball), Missy Franklin (swimming), Usain Bolt (track & field - tied 4th), Jason Dufner (golf - tied 4th), Ricky Nolasco (baseball), Kenley Jansen (baseball), Tiger Woods (golf), Adam Scott (golf), and Kyle Busch (auto racing).
Cabrera's selection as the Hickok Belt Award winner for August 2013 recognizes him as "the best of the best" in professional sports for the month and makes him eligible to receive the 2013 overall award, along with fellow monthly winners Colin Kaepernick, Joe Flacco, LeBron James and Phil Mickelson.
