- Miley Cyrus got a bunch of hate online for saying “You don’t have to be gay” on her Instagram Live.
- Miley’s now clarifying exactly what she meant by the comment after people started calling her homophobic.
Missed Miley Cyrus and Cody Simpson’s Instagram Live last night? Well, it may have been for the best, because in all honesty, it was...a lot. There were tons of gushy pet names, sure, but there was also a major shade-filled moment directed toward Liam Hemsworth that kinda resulted in Miley saying something that made a lot of her viewers uncomfortable.
On Miley’s Instagram Live, she said, “There are good men out there guys, don’t give up. You don’t have to be gay. There are good people with dicks out there, you just gotta find them. You gotta find a dick that’s not a dick, you know what I mean?” It was at this point that everyone watching was just like, Er, yikes. This totally implies that being gay is a choice!
But Miley didn’t stop there. “I always thought that I had to be gay because I just thought all guys were evil, but it’s not true,” she said. “There are good people out there that just happen to have dicks. I’ve only ever met one and he’s on this Live.” People might be happy that Miley has found happiness with Cody, but they were so not down with Miley saying “You don’t have to be gay” because it came off sounding seriously ignorant. So naturally, her comment got a lot of backlash online:
Miley, this is so not it. Women don’t “have to be gay” because they “can’t find a good person with a d*ck”.— Rosie Percy (@rosiepercy) October 21, 2019
Don’t use the queer community as a stop-gap because you couldn’t find a boyfriend.
People aren’t queer because they “gave up” on men.
This is so insulting. pic.twitter.com/lAzcEjHRcB
i can’t even begin to express how disgusted i am by what miley cyrus said. that is straight up harmful and reinforces homophobic beliefs that gay women just “haven’t found the right man” or that can be “converted by dick” go fuck yourself.— 𝐚𝐫𝐢 (@sunlightkissari) October 21, 2019
Miley Cyrus saying “you don’t have to be gay” and “dont give up” to girls in her Instagram live video is exactly what my girlfriends homophobic mother said to her when she came out.— j (@bird_stank) October 21, 2019
miley cyrus, i am so disappointed in you. take your biphobic, homophobic self elsewhere.— ciana🌸 (@ikeepcruisin) October 21, 2019
no sentence has ever angered me more than “don’t give up, you don’t have to be gay, there are good dicks out there, you just have to find them” ... like WHO the fuck says that?’ ??? never been more disappointed in miley cyrus.— lucy not vives (@maialycia) October 21, 2019
Following the slew of negative comments, Miley took it upon herself to clarify what she meant to say. On Instagram and Twitter, she posted a note that read: “I was talking shit about sucky guys, but let me be clear: YOU don’t CHOOSE your sexuality. You are born as you are. It has always been my priority to protect the LGBTQ community I am a part of. Happy Monday!”
Well...that’s that on that!
