Milwaukee Brewers players injury updates for the 2022 season

These are the players currently sidelined on the injured list for the Milwaukee Brewers.

In recent developments, Adrian Houser went back on the injured list Sept. 27, Freddy Peralta returned from the injured list Sept. 25, Eric Lauer returned from the injured list Sept. 23, Aaron Ashby returned from the injured list on Sept. 20 and Trevor Gott came back Sept. 21. It's certainly been an up-and-down year for injuries in the rotation.

The team also outrighted Jonathan Davis, who had been on a rehab assignment, on Sept. 26.

Justin Topa, who had been on the 60-day injured list, was activated and optioned to Class AAA Nashville, where he had been rehabbing after flexor tendon surgery. He hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2021. J.C. Mejía, who finished his 80-game suspension after testing positive for a banned substance, fulfilled his rehab outings and was activated, then optioned to Class AAA, then outrighted off the 40-man roster.

10- or 15-day injured list

Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Adrian Houser (37) leaves the game with an injury during the fourth inning of their game against the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday, September 27, 2022 at American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wis.

Injury: strained right groin

Last played: Sept. 28 (out for season)

Houser's troubled 2022 continued when he left his Sept. 27 start with a groin injury, something that manager Craig Counsell confirmed will need an injured-list stint. That means he's out for the rest of the regular season at least, eligible to return Oct. 13 if the Brewers are still alive in the postseason.

Houser, who also missed two months of the season with an elbow ailment, will finish the year 6-10 with a 4.73 after 23 appearances (22 starts).

Luis Perdomo, relief pitcher

Injury: right calf strain

Last played: Sept. 23 (eligible Oct. 8)

The reliever's trip to the injured list coincided with the return of Freddy Peralta, likely ending his season (barring a postseason berth). It's admittedly convenient, since the Brewers don't have to make a tough choice dropping a pitcher off the 40-man roster to make the move.

Perdomo appeared in 14 games this year with a 3.80 ERA.

St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher Trevor Rosenthal throws Saturday during the ninth inning of Game 2 of the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Rosenthal struck out the side to preserve a 1-0 victory and give the Cardinals a 2-0 series lead.

Injury: Strained left hamstring/teres muscle strain

Last played: 2020 (eligible to return, likely out for season)

Rosenthal was an interesting trade-deadline acquisition from San Francisco, considering he hasn't thrown a big-league pitch in nearly two years and just signed with the Giants in late July for $4.5 million. The Brewers gave up a fast-rising prospect at Advanced Class A in Tristan Peters to land him, a move that appears to have backfired now that a new injury is likely to sideline Rosenthal for the rest of the season

Rosenthal recorded a scoreless inning of relief in his first rehab appearance Aug. 17, but his next two outings went poorly, with soreness in his lat muscle prompting a visit back to Milwaukee for an examination. Manager Craig Counsell said it's similar the injury that sidelined Freddy Peralta for two months.

Rosenthal was an all-star in 2015 with the Cardinals but has battled injuries in recent years and has been with six organizations since the start of 2019.

Injury: forearm discomfort

Last played: July 31 (eligible to return, no timetable)

Gustave was part of a flurry of roster maneuvers at the trading deadline, putting his role on the big-league team in flux even if he bounces back. Gustave had been steady-if-unspectacular out of the bullpen this season, with a 3.86 ERA and 1.29 WHIP in 28 innings of work.

60-day injured list

Alex Jackson, catcher

Injury: left wrist inflammation

Last played: Aug. 11 (out for season)

The catcher went on the 7-day injured list in the minors Aug. 16 in the latest setback of what has been an injury-riddled season. Jackson had only played in four August games since returning from a July injury. The Brewers acquired Jackson shortly before the season as an emergency measure after Pedro Severino tested positive for a banned substance, but the team most recently turned to Mario Feliciano when Omar Narváez suffered a sore quad.

Newcomer Garrett Mitchell snagged jersey No. 5, the same number Jackson wore with the Brewers in his brief stint this season.

Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Miguel Sanchez hasn't played since June 21 due to right UCL discomfort.

Last played: June 21 (eligible to return, no timetable)

Sánchez has a 4.05 ERA over 12 games this year and had been a steady depth piece in the bullpen. His absence continues a rotating wheel of Brewers relievers losing time with injury. He began a rehab assignment at Class AAA Nashville on July 15, but that was cut short.

"He had a setback in his outing and we’re going to have to go slower here," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said July 22. "He experienced some discomfort, so we’re kind of back to Square 1. He’ll be with us here for the weekend and then he’s going to Phoenix after that."

He was transferred to the 60-day injured list as part of the roster moves around the trade deadline.

In the minors

Wisconsin Timber Rattlers infielder Freddy Zamora (9) throws to first base against the Beloit Snappers during their baseball game Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium in Grand Chute, Wis.

Tyler Black (No. 6 prospect by MLB.com). Black suffered a left scapula fracture making a diving play in center field July 10 at Advanced Class A in Wisconsin. He's done for the year but will likely not need surgery and could play in an offseason league.

Freddy Zamora (No. 22 prospect by MLB.com). The shortstop and second-round pick in 2020 has not played for Biloxi since May 11 after undergoing surgery on his left shoulder. He is out for the season but is expected to return full strength for 2023.

Abner Uribe (No. 26 prospect by MLB.com). The flame-throwing right-hander with fastball speeds as high as 103 miles per hour underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus in April and will miss the rest of the season. The 22-year-old would have had an outside shot of contributing in 2022.
