Mitsubishi Evo Going Hybrid, Could Make 500HP

Jeff Perez

As of late, Mitsubishi hasn’t been achieving peak performance in the US market. After rival Japanese firm Suzuki finally pulled the plug for good, many rumors suggested Mitsubishi was the next to go. But fear not, Mitsubishi faithful, a new Evo is on the way, and it could be packing 500 horsepower.

At 500-hp, the Evo XI will be headed upmarket to compete with the likes of the Porsche 911, Nissan GT-R, and Audi R8, respectively. But rather than the naturally aspirated or purely turbo route, Mitsubishi wants a turbocharged 4-cylinder (possibly diesel), paired to a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, all matted to an all-wheel-drive system.

Th design should take minor inspiration from the current generation of Lancer, but Autocar‘s report tells us that most of the look of the new sportscar will be influenced by the Concept-RA (pictured here), that we saw in Detroit back in 2008.

So, a 500-hp, all-wheel-drive, hybrid Evo- where do we sign up? Well, nowhere, just yet. Mitsubishi says we’re still a ways off from such a sportscar- more likely even that we’ll see the new R36 GT-R, Acura NSX or Toyota Supra revival in the market sooner. Let’s just hope it doesn’t take too long.
