"Design and interiors have been passions of mine for awhile now," Miranda Kerr tells House Beautiful. Though she may be best known for strutting down runways and gracing the covers of dozens of magazines, it turns out Kerr has long had an interest in life at home—her father worked in the construction industry when she was a child, and her design eye has been honed by the travel afforded by her modeling career. This weekend, she officially made her interior design debut, launching Love.Joy.Bliss, a collection of furniture with Universal Furniture at High Point Market, the country's biggest furniture fair.
And although there are plenty of celebrities who will slap their name on anything from bedding to booze, the team at Universal reveals that this was no surface partnership—in fact, Kerr showed up to their first meeting with a deck of 50 proposed designs, many of which made it into the collection virtually unchanged.
"Miranda had a vision for what she hoped to achieve with this collection, based on her career in fashion and her travels around the world,” says Universal's Director of Marketing Neil MacKenzie.
The supermodel's well-documented love of crystals also played a part in the launch; pieces of rose and clear quartz were sprinkled throughout the showroom on tables and shelves of her design. Another big influence? The concept of sacred geometry, which suggests that certain shapes and proportions have sacred meanings. The triangle is especially important in this belief system, so several of Kerr's pieces feature it in unexpected ways—like a console with a faceted front, or a cabinet with mother of pearl inlaid in a subtle chevron.
These geometric accents are balanced by soft colors and plush upholstery. The line as a whole is inspired by how Kerr likes to live and the feelings she achieves in her own home, which is underscored in its very name. "Originally, Love was for the bedroom, Joy was for the kitchen and dining, and Bliss for the living room; however, the entire collection encompasses the energy of Love, Joy and Bliss, and those words are marked somewhere on each piece," Kerr explains.
"I love the simple pleasure of being at home with my family," the designer says (a family which, as of last week, includes a new baby boy!). "For me, home is where the heart is. It’s my sanctuary. An ideal night would be a simple family dinner, followed by a board game together or karaoke." We can get down with that!
