How Much Are HKR International Limited (HKG:480) Insiders Spending On Buying Shares?

We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in HKR International Limited (HKG:480).

What Is Insider Selling?

Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.

We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares. For example, a Columbia University study found that 'insiders are more likely to engage in open market purchases of their own company’s stock when the firm is about to reveal new agreements with customers and suppliers'.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At HKR International

In the last twelve months, the biggest single purchase by an insider was when Chairman of the Board Mou Sing Cha bought HK$2.4m worth of shares at a price of HK$3.92 per share. That means that an insider was happy to buy shares at above the current price of HK$3.32. Their view may have changed since then, but at least it shows they felt optimistic at the time. In our view, the price an insider pays for shares is very important. As a general rule, we feel more positive about a stock when an insider has bought shares at above current prices, because that suggests they viewed the stock as good value, even at a higher price. The only individual insider to buy over the last year was Mou Sing Cha.

Mou Sing Cha bought a total of 1.2m shares over the year at an average price of HK$3.94. The chart below shows insider transactions (by individuals) over the last year. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. HKR International insiders own 47% of the company, currently worth about HK$2.3b based on the recent share price.
