Reaching Stardom
Born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV in Syracuse, New York, Cruise found stardom in the 1980s with leading roles in such films as “Risky Business,” “Top Gun” and “The Color of Money.” His first Golden Globe Award came in 1990 for his portrayal of Ron Kovic, a Vietnam War vet who goes on to become an anti-war activist, in the biographical film “Born on the Fourth of July.” Although nominated three times for an Academy Award, Cruise has never won.
Known for his boyish good looks and winning smile, the actor found one of his best-known — and longest-lasting — characters in 1996 when he played agent Ethan Hunt in the action/spy movie “Mission: Impossible.” The reboot of the 1960s TV show went on to gross nearly $460 million worldwide, and the star pocketed $70 million as both star and producer. The movie’s success spawned five more films in the series. As of this writing, the seventh installment is due for release in November 2021, and the eighth is being shot back-to-back with it.
